Although she had little formal training in mathematics, Germain impressed some of the greatest mathematicians of her time (including Lagrange, Legendre, and Gauss) with her ability and insight. Germain produced new and significant results in number theory, and her work in the theory of elasticity was awarded a prize by the Institut de France.
