We celebrate the life of Gerbert of Aurillac on April 9, the day he was elected Pope Sylvester II in the year 999.
He is thought to be the only mathematician/ astronomer ever to hold this lofty position.   He reigned from 997 -1003.

Gerbert was "a humanist centuries before the word was coined; his life was the first sign of the spirit that gave life to the Renaissance and scientific revolution, and his inspiration was the love of mathematics."
