Cauchy! Born: August 21, 1789 in Paris, France Died: May 23, 1857

Cauchy was born a little less than
six weeks after the fall of the Bastille. Thus, as a child of the
Revolution, he spent most of his life in a time of social revolution and
the Napoleonic wars.
Briefly, two major areas are associated with his work. First, he introduced rigor into mathematical analysis. Secondly, Cauchy made the study of groups both systematic and abstract. |
