Desargues was the founder of the field of projective
geometry, and was one of the first Western mathematicians to look
at geometry from other than a Greek point of view. He was a friend
and contemporary of several other great French mathematicians, including
René Descartes, Marin Mersenne, and Blaise Pascal.
