Today we celebrate the publication of the first mathematics book
printed in the Western Hemisphere!
The Sumario Compendioso was published in Mexico City in 1556 by a friar, Juan Diez freyle.

The printing press and paper were shipped from Spain and then carried to the high inland altitudes of Mexico City.

The only four known surviving copies are treasures of the
Huntington Library, San Marino, CA,  the
British Library, London, the
Duke University Library, and the
University of Salamanca in Spain.

On June 6, 1985 a facsimile copy was printed on the occasion of an official visit by the President of Mexico to Madrid.
We therefore celebrate the Sumario's birthday on June 6.

Happy Birthday
