Lennart Axel Edvard Carleson

Born:
  March 18, 1926 in Stockholm, Sweden

For his achievements, Carleson won the 2006 Abel Prize.  The prize is named for the brilliant Norwegian mathematician Niels Abel (1802-1829 ) and is worth 6 million NK (about US $920,000 ).  Students will recognize the name of "abelian groups."
