Birkhoff was one of the very best mathematicians on this side of the Atlantic. He published and lectured in many fields but his greatest contributions were probably in research into dynamical systems. Born: March 21,1884 Died: November 12, 1944 Unlike many of his
contemporaries in math and science, Birkhoff did not travel to Europe
until 1926, or 13 years after he had achieved renown with his proof of
Poincaré's last geometric theorem.
