 Happy Birthday
Banneker!

Born:  November 9, 1731
in Elliott's Mill, Maryland,

Died:  October 9, 1806

At 60, Banneker was chosen by George Washington to help lay out the blueprints for the new federal district in Washington.  Earlier, he had constructed the first wooden striking clock in North America and written best selling almanacs.  Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson wrote to Banneker saying he had "taken the liberty of sending your almanac to Monsieur de Condorcet, Secretary of the Academy of sciences at Paris."
