Marshall and his wife Sally were much loved members of the Caltech community in an era when their parties might include Richard Feynman, Murray Gell-Mann, Frank Borman and a stellar array of other Americans. 

Marshall is especially remembered for his famous  Theory of Groups (1959).   During WW II, he joined other mathematicians in doing classified work on cracking codes.
