Sammy Eilenberg of Columbia University was one of
the world's leading mathematicians and a legendary collector of South Asian
art. Still, his greatest talent may have been in getting people together
to talk mathematics. As a result, he was probably best known for
his collaborations with other distinguished mathematicians. In particular, Eilenberg is often remembered for his investigations with Saunders Mac Lane for their work in the 1960s on Category Theory. Friends
remember him as being quite a character. |
